The Book I Couldn't Finish

I love to read.  If there was a book that became a movie that I wanted to read I would sometimes see the movie first and later read the book, much later.  For some time now I've been trying to read Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All by Allan Gurganus but I just can't get past the first eighty pages.

I've watched the movie on television and delighted in it quite a bit however, the book moves so much slower and jumps around quite a bit.  The book invariably ends up back on my to-read list never to be finished.

I'll call this book my mountain.  It is 875 pages in length in the soft cover edition I have in my mitts.  I've read longer books that were more stimulating.

If you enjoy the writings of Mark Twain you'll most likely enjoy reading this particular novel.  Currently I am reading a book by Mark Twain and am again having difficulty getting into the book.  Perhaps it is the writing style that I don't enjoy.
Another book by Allan Gurganus I've yet to read nor purchase.

  1. I always find it is so hard to read a book after seeing a movie. Do you suggest seeing movie of The Oldest Living Confederate or trying to read the book first?

    1. I think that maybe watching the movie first rather ruined me for the book.

  2. I've read this book...twice :) That's how much I love this book. It does get slow, but it gets wild near the end.

    1. Chick, I'll give it another try soon. Maybe I'm just so distracted with the holidays is all. Thanks for telling me you loved it.

  3. I hate it when you start a book and then it's hard - or impossible - to finish. i've had to give up on books too. Right now i'm reading Wolf Hall and it's a big book, which is usually fine with me, but it is also a slow-mover. After i get through it next up needs to be chick lit!

    1. I normally don't give up on books until page 100. I really try to get into a book. Maybe I just need to be in a different mood to read this particular book.

    1. If I finish the book I'll let you know what I thought of it too. According to the ratings it has 4 stars so it must be good, just can't get into it right now.

  5. For me it is the Lord of the Rings novels. I cant get through them. CS Lewis Narnia books, after book 4,... I have a hard time getting through them. Oddly enough I have no problem with "gone with the wind"

  6. I loved that book and had no idea there was a movie made! Try the book "These is My Words" by Nancy Turner. I think there are three books in the series. It is a similar writing style and a great story!
